Lakeside Mental Health Metaverse Experience – Strategic Systems Architecture
Healthcare & Education • Strategic Systems Architect & Lead Developer

Overview
Lakeside, a leading mental health organization collaborating with experts like Dr. Sandra Bloom, tasked me with delivering a fully functional immersive metaverse experience that could showcase their services and therapeutic approaches. The project was stalled at 40% completion, and my role was to rescue and restructure the experience, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and an engaging, educational flow for users.
Systems Architecture & Strategic Design
- Custom Avatar System: Multi-avatar distribution with integrated dialog to guide users through therapeutic activities.
- Dialog & Audio Architecture: Robust system synchronizing narration, text overlays, and avatar animations — enabling a consistent educational flow across stations.
- Transportation Pod: A vehicle-like movement system designed to make transitions between stations seamless, intentional, and supportive of the therapeutic narrative.
- Interactive Minigames: Therapeutic exercises (e.g., bubble popping) structured to reinforce engagement and learning objectives.
- Progress Saving: Modular save/load system tracking user completion across sessions for long-term retention of educational outcomes.
- Teleportation Map & Multi-Station Navigation: Intuitive navigation across 5 major stations designed for accessibility and flow.
- 3D Visualizations & Animated Pets: Holographic brain models, oximeter animations, and custom pet companions crafted for engagement and immersion.
- Mobile Optimization: Cross-platform tuning to ensure smooth performance on a wide range of devices while maintaining visual fidelity.
Strategic Outcomes
The architecture enabled Lakeside to deliver a 30+ minute, multi-station immersive experience that educates and engages patients remotely. The modular design allows the organization to update content independently, ensuring long-term scalability. The experience is now actively used to give families a preview of services from home, supporting both engagement and educational goals.

Why This Matters
This project demonstrates how strategic system design in an educational metaverse can:
- Enable seamless interaction across multiple learning stations
- Maintain retention and engagement through structured progression
- Provide extensible frameworks for content updates without additional developer intervention
Scope & Role
- Systems architecture and development across avatar, dialog, navigation, and interactive minigame frameworks
- Agile collaboration with Lakeside leadership and clinical experts to integrate feedback into system design
- Cross-platform performance optimization and UX design to maximize accessibility
